Frequently Asked Questions

What Accounting & Finance roles do you fill in Boston?

If it sits within Finance & Accounting, we recruit for it.

We cover the full spectrum – from Accounting Clerks, AP/AR Specialists, and Staff Accountants to Senior Financial Analysts, Controllers, and C-suite executives like CFOs and VPs of Finance. We also place professionals in tax, treasury, internal audit, payroll, and public accounting.

We're a smaller company without a full recruiting team - can you help?

Yes – we act as the recruiting function you don’t have, so your CFO or Controller isn’t posting jobs and screening resumes between close cycles.

What hiring models do you offer?

Temp (contract), temp-to-hire, and direct hire (permanent). We’ll recommend the right model for the role, your budget, and your timeline.

Is there any cost to get started, and how do your fees work?

There’s no upfront cost or retainer to begin a search. For direct-hire placements, you pay a one-time fee only if you hire a candidate we introduce. For temp and temp-to-hire, you’re billed a single hourly rate for hours worked and covers the associate’s pay, payroll taxes, workers’ comp, and benefits – no separate employer cost on your side. Our fees are competitive with other specialty Accounting & Finance recruitment firms, and we’ll walk you through the exact terms for your role before any agreement.

How quickly can you deliver candidates?

Speed is a core part of what we do. Our recruiters draw from an exclusive candidate database, 73% built from referrals, which means we’re not starting from scratch. Many of these professionals are passive candidates already vetted and ready to go, so we can move fast when you need us to.

What makes Atrium's Boston recruiters different?

We specialize in Accounting & Finance and work the greater Boston market specifically.  Many of our recruiters came from the profession themselves. Because 73% of our talent comes from referrals, you reach passive professionals who aren’t applying to job postings.

Do we have to work with you exclusively?

No. You can engage us on a non-exclusive basis – you only pay if you hire someone we introduce. Most clients start with a single hire or a handful of roles, then move to an exclusive arrangement once we’ve proven ourselves. Either way, we’ll be upfront about the best approach for your search – even if that means recommending another firm.

How are temporary associates employed and paid?

Temporary associates are employed by Atrium as the Employer of Record. We handle onboarding, payroll, timesheets, workers’ compensation, benefits administration, and compliance – you get the talent without the administrative burden. You’re invoiced only for hours worked.

What's the difference between temp, temp-to-hire, and direct hire? And which is right for us?

Temporary/contract staffing means we place a professional on our payroll for a defined period to cover a project or a gap. You pay an all-inclusive hourly bill rate; we handle wages, payroll taxes, workers’ comp, and benefits. This is ideal for seasonal surges (tax season, year-end close), leave coverage, or project work like ERP implementations.

Temp-to-hire starts as a contract engagement with a defined path to permanent conversion. You get a working trial period before committing. Keep in mind that in a tight accounting labor market, top candidates often prefer direct offers, so temp-to-hire works best when paired with a clear timeline and genuine intent to convert.

Direct hire means the candidate joins your payroll from day one. We manage the full search – sourcing, screening, interviewing, offer negotiation – and you pay a one-time placement fee. This is the strongest option for senior-level and leadership roles (Controllers, CFOs, Directors) where long-term fit and institutional knowledge matter most.

Will candidates know our systems and our industry?

We screen for the exact tools your team runs – ERP and accounting platforms like NetSuite, SAP, Workday, Sage, or QuickBooks, plus close and reporting software – and for relevant industry experience before we send a single resume. Tell us your stack and must-haves and we match to them.

How do you screen and vet Accounting & Finance candidates?

Structured interviews with a recruiter who knows the function, plus skills and systems validation (ERP, month-end close, reporting) and technical assessments where the role calls for them – not keyword matching. We verify certifications (CPA, CMA, CFA) where required and run reference checks with former supervisors, so the experience on the resume is the experience you get – unlike unscreened job-board applicants.

Can you run a confidential search to replace someone currently in the role?

Yes – confidential replacement searches are routine for senior finance roles. We map the market and approach candidates discreetly, without naming your company until a vetted candidate has signed an NDA, so the search never signals instability to your team or your customers.

What controls should we have for finance staff placed through an agency?

Standard segregation-of-duties and system-access controls still apply. At growing companies where full segregation isn’t always practical, we can help you think through compensating controls – dual approval on disbursements, independent reconciliations, restricted system access – for any temporary associate touching cash, AP, or the GL. Background and credit checks are available too.

When does it make sense to use a staffing agency instead of hiring our own?

When speed matters, the role is senior or hard-to-fill, you need coverage for a leave or project, or your team doesn’t have the bandwidth to run a proper search.

How do I request talent?

Submit a position or get in touch with the role, must-haves, comp range, and start date. We’ll come back with a shortlist.
